{"id":163,"date":"2013-08-04T17:39:27","date_gmt":"2013-08-04T20:39:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/preview.fencingnb.ca\/?page_id=163"},"modified":"2025-09-28T10:23:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-28T13:23:30","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fencingnb.ca\/?page_id=163","title":{"rendered":"History of FENB"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div id=\"text_only-text1\">\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">History of Fencing in New Brunswick<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The provincial fencing association was officially established as the New Brunswick Fencing Association in 1969\u00a0and its founding president was Alfred Knappe.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred Knappe began fencing while a teenager\u00a0in the city of Hof in West Germany in 1950.\u00a0 In the spring of 1955 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Fredericton.\u00a0 In 1966 he was invited to coach at the newly formed fencing club at the University of New Brunswick where he was working at the time.\u00a0 In1967 Alfred represented NB\u00a0at the National Fencing Championships in Montreal and at the Eastern Canadian Championships at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia in 1968.\u00a0\u00a0 Here he met Gabriel Timar who had just started a club in Saint John.\u00a0 A club had also started up in St. Andrews.\u00a0 Alfred gathered representatives from these three clubs in 1969 with the result that the New Brunswick Fencing Association was born and Alfred was elected as its first President.<\/p>\n<p>New Brunswick&#8217;s first fencing tournament was the New Brunswick Championships held at the Fredericton YMCA\u00a0on March 21, 1970 in conjunction with the New Brunswick Winter Games.\u00a0 It was a men&#8217;s foil event involving six fencers: Rick Gosselin, Bob Pottle and Bill MacDonald from the Saint John YMCA\u00a0club and Alan Muzzerall, Kevin Montague and Brian Grimley from Fredericton.\u00a0 Rick Gosselin emerged as the first NB\u00a0Provincial Champion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>History of Fencing in New Brunswick The provincial fencing association was officially established as the New Brunswick Fencing Association in 1969\u00a0and its founding president was Alfred Knappe.
