Regulations

The highest standard of Rules & Regulations for Competitions is set by the International Fencing Federation (FIE - Federation Internationale d'Escrime).

Competitions sanctioned by the Canadian Fencing Federation must abide by additional Rules & Regulations set by the Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF).

Competitions hosted by FENB clubs do not require full adherence to the international standard.  The primary differences relate to clothing & equipment standards.  Fencers competing in NB competitions are not required to wear FIE standard clothing or masks nor to have FIE standard weapons.  Fencing breeches are also not required however, in place of breeches, competitors must wear long pants made of a sturdy material.

Age Group Definitions and Eligibility for Competition

FENB follows the practice of the national and international fencing federations with regard to age group definitions and age eligibility for competitions.

Basic Principle: Competitors remain eligible to compete in a designated age group throughout one competition season based on their age on January 1st of the current season.

Example 1: A fencer who turns 17 in December will not be eligible to fence under 17 events from the start of the current competition season in September even when that fencer is still 16.

Example 2: A fencer who turns 17 in January will continue to be eligible to fence in under 17 events until the end of the current competition season in June even when the fencer has turned 17.

Only the birth year determines which age group a fencer falls into.
