Club Leaders' Guide

Basic Club Organization

In every fencing club, there are always decisions to be made to keep the club operating and to meet the needs of its members.  Usually, a small group of club members accept responsibility to lead the club.

General role of club leaders:  Those who accept a club leadership position have a general responsibility to act in the best interests of the members.  This includes a responsibility to ensure that club activities are safe, ethically sound and of good quality.  They must also ensure that the financial management of the club is sound and that they abide by club policies approved by its members.

Primary Leadership Group: Club Executive, Board of Directors, Head Haunchos ... Regardless of the name, most fencing clubs will benefit from a small primary leadership group of two or three people who will take responsibility to envision club growth and plan, direct and manage club activities.  The most important responsibilities of this group are:

1. to work closely with the coaching staff to ensure that the coaches' vision for the club is supported and compatible with the club's needs.

2.  to keep "a finger on the pulse" of its members by providing regular opportunities for members to communicate their needs and contribute their ideas.
